OK, so graphs don’t ‘speak’ to most people, but. . . .

You have to add in the CO2 emissions from hundreds of thousands of people travelling lots of extra miles to get home, Ark Royal, the BBC and others sending loads of people all over the place, wasted food and so on and on and on.

True with regards to other forms of travel, but planes are typically many times more carbon intensive than trains and the point is most of the reduction is due to people travelling many many less miles because planes are temporarily not an option. Yet life goes on and most people seem to be enjoying the clear skies, if you live near an airport the sound of bees and the birds can be heard for a change. I think it’s great!
I hope that the inconvenience no doubt suffered by a few will be outweighed by an understanding that the overnight disappearance of aviation is mostly a good thing, because it demonstrates how we are not as dependent as we think on high speed travel to live good lives, in fact quite the reverse in many ways.
